Container Gardens Come Alive!

Spring is an exciting time in the Habitat and one of the highlights of the season

is the Container Garden Project.  The student participation project started in 2005

with 12 containers.  Last year, in   its third season, every classroom participated in

the program.  Over 30 containers line the walkway that winds through the

Courtyard

In early April, classrooms select a theme.  The Habitat committee suggests themes but classrooms can come up with themes of their own.  The Habitat Committee provides photos of previous containers and a resource binder for reference.  Popular themes include Peter Rabbit's Garden, Volcano Container, Pizza Garden, among many others.  Signs are attached to each container to identify the classroom and theme.

By late April, weather permitting, the Habitat Committee compiles a plant list

and starts shopping for plants that fit the selected themes.

In early May, planting times are scheduled with classroom teachers.  The goal

is to complete as many containers as possible in time for the Ice Cream Social.

The Habitat Committee also holds an Open House so that the Ironia

community can view the containers as well as the various garden beds.

The Habitat Committee makes the basic preparations for the containers.  Plants are ready for planting, tools are available and supplies are provided.  Every student participates in some way.  The placement of the container is important -- the plants need much sun or can they tolerate shade?  The pot should be large enough to hold the roots that will expand over the growing season.  Drainage should be adequate - do the plants need a lot of moisture or do they prefer drier conditions?   Potting soil is added.  Students take turns adding fertilizer as well as water retention crystals.   Students then delicately remove the plants from their original pots and position them in the permanent container.   The plants look a bit small at first, but it's always a delightful surprise to see how much they grow after a few weeks and a few months!

The Habitat Committee maintains the garden over the summer so that students who visit over the summer can check the progress of their containers.  The season continues in early fall - most containers are still in great condition until about Halloween!
