PAWS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Classes have limited space, are for pure enjoyment and are separated by age:

 

ACTING (4th – 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Courtney Spellman

A fun introduction into the fundamentals of acting including warm-up exercises, theatre games and improvision.  Students will explore their creative side, collaborate with their fellow actors and draw on their imaginative skills to perform mini-scripts and dialogues in class.  If time permits, students will perform a one act play for a small audience during class time.

 

ART ADVENTURES WITH COLOR ME MINE (K-5th Grade)

Instructors: Pauline Liu

Please note this class costs $75

 

When you enter the world of Color Me Mine ART ADVENTURES, the opportunities are limitless.  Children will be customizing desk top organizers to brighten up their desks and make studying fun.

 

Our pottery painting programs focus on building a child’s artistic skill and broadening his/her knowledge of pottery painting techniques.  All pottery pieces are non-toxic, unleaded and food safe.

Color Me Mine Desk:

                                    Project 1          Customized pencil holder to hold pens and pencils

                        Project 3          Personalized picture frame for a very special picture

ART OF HENNA (4th & 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Bijal Patel

Introductions to Henna, what is Henna, why people use it, where is it popular and how to get the most color?  You will also learn different types of Henna designs by drawing on paper.  You will learn how to prepare Henna paste, ingredients- Henna powder (Lawsonia Inermis) plant leaves powder, Tea, lemon juice, Eucalyptus oil (optional).  You will learn to make a Henna cone with plastic and make designs on your hands and feet with real Henna.

 

AVIATION CLUB (K-5th Grade)

Instructor:  Hobby Quest

Please note this class costs $65

Join us as we build and fly real model airplanes while we explore the amazing world of aviation! Each student will build newly designed model airplanes from scratch and each student takes home 2 different flying models including an exciting new edition of a motorized Balsa wood model suitable for all ages!

 

Colossal Cookie Creations (K-2nd Grade)

Instructor:  Miss Sheppard

Each week, we will explore a specific theme.  We will kick off our sessions listening to a story that follows our theme.  Listening will help inspire our inner cookie decorator minds!  Next, we will dive into the cookie decorating world, surrounding ourselves with sprinkles, icings, and other yummy decorations.  Finally, we will end our session presenting our cookies to our fellow baker friends and then color in pictures based upon our weekly theme.  

Students will leave with a delicious personalized cookie that they can share at home!

 

 

 

 

 

COOKING CLASS (4th-5th)

Instructors: Elena Martinez & Angela Abreu

Come and learn how fun it is to cook!!!
You will learn how to follow a recipe and create different fun foods

that you can try at home with your family.

 

 

CREATIVE CARDS (K-2nd)

Instructor: Alexandra Dezenzo K-2nd

You will learn how to create birthday cards, gift bags with matching tissue paper with a matching gift card

and stationery. We will be learning the basic steps of rubber stamping and different coloring techniques.

 

CUPCAKE DECORATING (K-2nd Grade)

Instructors: Cecilia Kunzmann & Debbie Kudriavetz

Join us as we learn the art of cupcake decorating. Each week students will frost and decorate 3-4 delicious cupcakes.  We will be using a variety of frostings, candy and nuts to finish our creative and fun masterpieces.  At the end of the session, we will compile our recipes into a “Cupcake Cookbook” to take home.

 

FLOWER ARRANGING (2nd – 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Joanne Reid
Learn how to make a beautiful flower arrangement for someone special. Using a combination of fresh and dried flowers you will be amazed at just how easy it can be to make a beautiful colorful creation.

 

Fun Brain Training (1st-5th Grade)

Instructor: Learning Rx Certified Trainers

 Students will work with games, puzzles, fun exercises to sharpen and improve their "brain power".

 

KARATE (K-5th Grade)

Instructor:  Jersey Judo Academy

Students will be taught the traditional style of Isshinryu Karate.  This class will focus on giving your child an introduction to the basic skills. The skills learned will help students develop coordination, balance, posture and endurance.  It will also teach the students self-confidence and discipline.  Certified Black Belt Instructors are from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil, who have trained under Richard Norris a Hachi Dan (8th Degree Black Belt).

 

LEGO BUILD IT (K- 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Karen May

Come and build with us!  Each week we will have LEGO challenges for novice to master builders.  Lots of cool new materials will be provided for you to work with.  Let’s see what you can create!  Come and have FUN!

MAD SCIENCE (K-5th Grade)

Instructor:  Mad Science Company

Please note:  This class costs $55

 Scientific Wonders

Watts Up: Learn about electricity, its properties and its role in natural phenomena. Make indoor lightning while conducting hair-raising experiments with our electro-static generator.

Magnetic Magic: Investigate the powers and daily uses of magnets. Test for electromagnetic fields and then perform more experiments with your own home magnet lab!

Optical Illusions: Build your own periscope while learning about optics, reflection and sight. Watch celebrity images change before your very eyes! Seeing is not always believing!

Lights, Color, Action!: Uncover the hidden components in ordinary light and build your own Newton's color wheel to prove it. Attend a spectacular chemical energy display!

 

MAKE IT & TAKE IT BY THE SEA! (2nd-4th)

Instructor: Ms. Brembs

Each week the students will create a project that is associated with the sea.  They will be able to "make & take" a lighthouse, sea creatures, magnets, fossils, sun catchers, paperweights, and more.  They will use shells, beads, sand, wire and much, much more!

 

MAKING MAGIC (K-5TH Grade)

Instructor:  Hobby Quest

Please note:  This class costs $65

Learn magic tricks that will amaze audiences of any age! Our class combines instructor presentation, step-by-step explanation, hands-on learning, group practice sessions and individual performance. With us you will learn how to make things disappear, transform sugar to candy, and the multiplying sponge ball trick!!

 

MISS TYROLER’S ART CLASS (K-2nd)

Instructor:  Miss Tyroler

Please note:  This class costs $65

ART FUN FOR YOU!   Grades Kindergarten through Second

The students will create art projects involving drawing, painting, collage, and printmaking

 

MURAL ART (3rd – 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Kelly Varga

Did you know that Leonardo DaVinci and Michelangelo were both Mural Artists?  Learn about the art and artists of Mural painting, while we create our own lasting masterpiece on an interior wall of Ironia Elementary School!  Children should bring "art clothes" and smocks, as the paints will not wash out of clothing.  

 

RECYCLED FUN (2nd-5th Grade)

Instructor:  Kim Schnitker

Each week we will create something different using common items found right in your recycling bin at home. 

From bottle cap magnets and necklaces to a coin pouch made from empty juice bags,

all you need to bring is your imagination and get ready to have some fun!

 

REPORTING & JOURNALISM

CREATING AN IRONIA NEWSPAPER!  (5th Graders)

Instructor:  Ms. DePeri

Spend the next four weeks gathering the news and walking the beats of Ironia Elementary!  Students will create their own beats and hit the halls gathering facts, drafting, editing and publishing their stories.  On the last week, students will get the presses rolling!

 


SCRAP BOOKING (K – 5th Grade)

Instructors: Melissa DePerna

Create a colorful album of cherished people, places and events using scrap booking products including papers, stickers and scrap booking tools. What a phenomenal way to relive and share memories while reinforcing creativity, self-esteem and confidence! Students should bring 20 developed pictures of each season (spring, summer, fall, and winter, including birthdays and holidays), 80 pictures total should be brought to the first session.  Allow the children to take photos of their home, family, friends, pets, sports etc. and select their favorite shots for use in this project.  Kids never seem to have enough pictures, so send in duplicates of photos you already have at home.

 

SILLY SNACKS (1st-2nd Grade)

Instructors:  Megan Eberly & Erica Wells

Have you ever made a sugary beach for your favorite gummy snack?  In Silly Snacks you will take your favorite treats and make them into something silly and unexpected.  You will make yummy and creative snacks that you can eat in class or take home to enjoy with family and friends.  No matter what, you will always have fun in Silly Snacks!

 

SPY ACADEMY (K-5th Grade)

Instructor:  Mad Science Company

Please note:  This class costs $65

Step into the shoes of a detective-uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Whodunit? Students will find out by using their Fingerprint Finder to place and identify UV prints. 

Classes will be separated by grade levels

 

UGLY DOLL CREATION (2nd – 5th)

Instructor:  Stacey Bolnick

You will create and design your own ugly doll and ugly doll art.  The uglier the better!

We will be sewing and working with felt!

 

WEARABLE ART (3rd-5th Grade)

Instructor Nan Holder

You will make a variety of different art projects that can be worn or carried.  Bring your creative imagination to each class and go home with a different art project.

 

YOGA (3rd – 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Cheyane Resiner

Yoga is an ancient discipline that explores, develops and integrates the body, mind and spirit.  We will work on stretches and poses that strengthen muscles throughout the body.  We will work on core strengthening and balancing poses to improve flexibility and posture.  Students will improve concentration and focus, stimulate their imagination and help to release energy in a fun, safe environment.  In this class we will employ a gentle, encouraging teaching style that will improve confidence as well as overall health.  Students should dress comfortably.

 

ZUMBA (4th & 5th Grade)

Instructor:  Diana Jacobsen

Zumba – a fun energetic fitness class for 4th and 5th grade boys and girls.  Zumba uses dance and aerobic moves to lively Latin, pop, and other International music.  It is so much fun that it doesn’t feel like exercise!  The class will learn some dance moves to pop songs like Dynamite by Taio Cruz and Waka Waka by Shakira.  Please wear court type sneakers (no running shoes), wear light loose gym type clothing, and bring a small towel.  Parents will need to sign a waiver form.
